Open pan salt works

The Kraków Saltworks Museum Wieliczka will hold a historical stall selling pieces of rock salt and evaporated salt between 22-26 June at St. John’s Fair by Wawel Hill. Next to the stall will be two hearths demonstrating medieval methods of obtaining salt by evaporating brine. The process will be shown in ancient earthenware pots and metal pans that came into use later. Both types of vessels were used to boil brine to evaporate water.

A staged arrival of a salt merchant’s cart from Wieliczka, organised by the Museum on 23 June, will recall Kraków’s old trading rights. The merchants will bring barrels and baskets filled with salt, and even a traditional lump of rock salt a similar size to those delivered to Kraków’s market square in the 14th century.
