Listen to the thunder of hooves on the ground… horsemen approaching! It seems the dragon has returned to Wawel Hill, and the King is calling for knights. Ladies stand on tiptoe to peer above the crowd, while kids look on curiously. The arriving daredevils have no trouble in collecting rings from the ground on the tips of their lances or halving a cabbage with a sword. And they haven’t just practiced on cabbages… But that was just cavorting. Each knight has already selected a lady, and now he’ll have to duel in her honour. It’s time for the knights’ tournament; the crowd will marvel at lance duels and swordfights, and the best on the battlefield will have the honour of facing the dragon.

We’re going back a couple of centuries: city patrols are treading carefully, as in recent weeks frightened travellers have been bringing news of the Tatars. You need to keep a lookout, because they strike quick as lightning, launching arrows in a full gallop: they want to invade the city again; we must defend Kraków! The bugle calls the alarm…
